The big ONE

Celebrating a first birthday is BIG!  Congratulations!  You kept a tiny human alive for a year.  You haven’t slept, showered, or changed your clothes in a few days but, you’ve never been happier.  Before my son was born, I couldn’t understand why my mom friends only talked about their kids.  After I pushed out the cutest eight pound, precious faced little being from my being, I got it.  He’s amazing!  He looks like me!  He yawned!  He’s advanced!

Planning the first birthday was quite the experience.  Since I am a structured type, who likes control, “Project One,” started months in advance.  Our boy was born just before Halloween so naturally, pumpkins were the theme. Budget you ask?  Yikes.  I may have gone a bit overboard….especially with the cakes.  Yes, two cakes.  I insisted on a “smash cake” and a sheet cake for guests.  They were custom ordered from Gelson’s and absolutely beautiful.  The smash cake was in the shape of a pumpkin with the cutest number 1 as the stem.  The sheet cake was vanilla with orange frosting complete with cobwebs and dancing ghosts.  Perfect.

Now for decorations… Naturally, I went pinterest crazy.  Streamers, balloons, a pinata, bubbles, and game stations for kids including a bean bag toss and mini bowling station.  I made my 76 year old dad stand on a ladder to wrap the front door in toilet paper. We added a set of googly eyes to make the perfect “mummy entrance.”  Thank you, Dad.  No corner was left undecorated.  The guest bath was covered in cobwebs, spiders, and lighted with spooky skeleton candles.  Pumpkin spice scented candles glowed throughout the rest of the house and atop the mantle grew a pumpkin patch.  Streamers and balloons covered the wall behind Logan’s high chair and a specially made banner reading, “I am one,” hung perfectly centered above his head.  We even hired a photographer so we could enjoy the event and not have to worry about “capturing the moment.”  Dinner was fully catered along with trays of “kid food” including oreo cookies with gummy bears sprinkled on top.  Guests sipped champagne or juice out of individually decorated cups.  I glued eyeballs and drew funny mouths on every orange cup…it took me days.  On the day of the party, I got my hair blown out and nails done.  You’d think I was getting married.  I bought the cutest black shift dress and Logan a custom “number one” onesie paired with jeans and a bow tie.

We hosted about 30 guests and I was one happy mama.  I typically don’t like a lot of attention, but that afternoon was different.  I soaked up the fact that family and friends were so gracious and kind to spend their time with us.  In all honesty, my son was turning one, but it was MY party.  And I loved it.

Having Logan is the best thing I’ll ever do in life.  He’s my pride and joy.  Normally I try to limit the number of  “adorable little Logan” stories I tell to avoid boring others to tears, but during the party, I gave myself permission to tell countless “you had to be there” tales.  We ate, drank, blew bubbles, smashed a pinata, and laughed a lot.  Yes, we would have had just as good a time without the custom order cakes and catered food but, I felt so strongly about celebrating the first birthday.  Pregnancy was rough, child birth was amazing and that first year of raising a baby is, to say the least, intense.  An afternoon of celebrating the first year of life was wonderful and I will always cherish the experience.  Wishing all you mamas out there a happy ONE.

Workin’ this weekend

I’m excited to be teaching a MAT Pilates certificate course this weekend!  The course is new to West Lake, CA and it’s only the second time I’m teaching it…eeek.  I’m a bit nervous so naturally, I’m procrastinating writing this and surfing Insta #instaobsessed.   Working all weekend also means no time with my boy.  But, I do think it’s great he and my husband have alone/bonding time.  Dads do things with kids moms would NEVER THINK OF…and I think it’s great.  What are your weekend plans?  Wish me luck – I need it and maybe some tequila….weeeee

The Liebster Award

I was very sweetly nominated by the lovely Katie of Denim and Fringe for a Liebster award.  I started this blog over Christmas break.  I had time off from work and became obsessed with Instagram style bloggers.  I’ve always been a creative minded person and so I dove in.  It’s been a fun learning curve and I can’t get enough.  The name “something cute happened” comes from a hilarious comedian named Neal Brennan.  He wrote a bit about “women” and “cute” that had me in stitches.  Here’s the link:–uncensored—cute-s–t

The way it works is I post 5 facts about myself, answer Katie’s 5 questions below, nominate 5 other bloggers and give them 5 questions to answer. So, here we go!

5 facts about me:

  1.  I am a retired ballerina.  I started dancing at age 6 and toured on a national level as well danced with the Cologne Ballet Academy in Cologne, Germany.
  2. I am extremely claustrophobic !  Yikes!
  3.  I worked for Disney for years as “friends” with Cinderella.
  4. I have a weird ability to remember names – like even people’s kids’ names that I hardly know.  It freaks me out.
  5. I’m an extremely structured/organized person.  Like to a fault.  I wish some days I could break routine but, I don’t know how.

Here are my answers to Katie’s 5 questions:

  1. What is your guilty pleasure as a parent? Shopping alone at Target.
  2. What does your “mom uniform” consist of?  Either ripped jeans or denim shorts, a casual T, and sandals.
  3. How did your marriage change after becoming a parent?  Good question!  It definitely made us closer after our son was born but, it’s work to make time just for us.  We try to go out once a month and set aside one night a week to watch bad reality TV together.
  4. Who is your favorite person to follow on Instagram? @gaiaandnina
  5. What is your favorite beverage? Coffee!

I nominate:

Here are my questions for you:

  1.  Are you a stay at home mom or working mom?
  2. How do you make time just for you during the week?
  3. Do you like to cook?  If yes, what ?  (and can you please share because I REALLY NEED HELP )
  4. Do you find time to fit exercise into your busy week?
  5. Do you have “date night” with your hubs?  How often during the month?

Thank you !!! I can’t wait to read your answers.

Let’s talk Swimwear

I’ve been on the hunt for a cute one piece.  I’ve tried on a few (at my favorite store, Target)  and the results? They made me feel “mature” and by that I mean old….the hunt continues.  Here are a few cute choices.  What are your thoughts?|pdp|related_prods_vv|pdpv1|pdp|related_prods_vv|pdpv1

Vests – super easy to pair with denim shorts, a skirt, and tank top to complete your look.  Here are a few of my favorites all from Target.  Enjoy!
